Tuesday, June 14 | 7 PM: What can we learn from Cuba’s Successes in Combating Illiteracy at home & abroad?
Hear Luisa Campos, Director of Cuba’s Museum of Literacy, & see the inspiring film “Maestra,” a short documentary on how young women teaching in Cuba’s historic campaign against illiteracy not only made Cuba one of the most literate nations, but also were empowered themselves. “This film brought tears to my eyes. Thank you. It is beautiful.” — Alice Walker, Writer, Peacemaker, Pulitzer Prize Winner & Author of “The Color Purple.” See the trailer & more info at http://www.maestrathefilm.org/.Luisa Campos will speak on Cuba’s “Yo Si Puedo” program, which has been used to successfully combat illiteracy, throughout Latin America, and as far as Australia, where it has helped keep aboriginal people out of jail (see http://www.smh.com.au/national/from-cuba-with-love-20140713-3bvp5.html).This bi-lingual program is open to the public, free of charge with donations accepted, at Central United Methodist Church, 639 N. 25th St. (at Wisconsin Ave., with free off street parking south of the church). Sponsored by WI Coalition to Normalize Relations with Cuba, www.wicuba.org, 414.273.1040.
